Portugal Golden Visa

Portugal remains one of Europe's most sought-after residence-by-investment destinations, combining an exceptional quality of life with genuine international mobility and a long-term route to EU citizenship. For clients who want a secure foothold in Europe without having to relocate, it is one of the most flexible options available today.

Qualifying Investment Options

Since the 2023 housing law removed property as an eligible route, the program now centres on capital options:

  • Venture capital or private equity funds: EUR 500,000 into qualifying regulated funds with no residential real estate exposure. This is now the most popular route.
  • Business investment: EUR 500,000 to establish a Portuguese company and create at least five permanent jobs
  • Job creation: at least ten full-time jobs in Portugal
  • Scientific research: EUR 500,000 supporting approved research institutions
  • Cultural and artistic support: EUR 250,000, reduced to EUR 200,000 in low-density areas

The Path to Citizenship

In May 2026, Portugal signed a revised Nationality Law that lengthened the road to a passport while leaving the residency program itself unchanged. Most applicants are now eligible to apply for citizenship after ten years of residence, with a shorter seven-year period for EU and CPLP nationals. For applications under the new rules, the residency clock generally starts from the date the first residence card is issued. Citizenship requires an A2 Portuguese language certificate, a civic knowledge test, and a clean record.
